LocaCarnivore DIY Series: Savage Barrel Swap

Savage bolt-action rifles have many excellent features.  They are accurate, simple, reliable, and affordable.  To this list add, easy to modify.  All Savages based on their original Model 10 feature a no nonsense barrel attachment method.  While most rifles barrels are torqued into place and require a precise, machined fit at the barrel shoulder to receiver interface, the Savage uses a simple lock nut with a spacer which doubles as a recoil lug.  This is similar to AR rifles.

The barrel nut system allows the gun owner to change barrels at home with a few tools.  This means as long as a particular cartridge fits the action’s length and its case rim is compatible with the bolt face, the end user can re-chamber them with a just a barrel swap.  A .308 can become a 6.5 Creedmoor, or a 7mm Remington Magnum can morph into a .458 Winchester Magnum, and back again, in less than an hour.

Here’s a quick video which will teach you how to change out a Savage rifle barrel.
