Second Grizzly Attack in Montana in One Week

Montana state wildlife officials said a grizzly bear mauled a Montana woman on a ranch near Gardiner earlier today, September 11th.  This is the second attack by grizzlies there in less than a week.  Another bear injured a hunter in southwestern Montana on September 5th.

Both victims survived.  In each case, the bears involved defended a nearby kill.  The first victim could not deploy their bear spray before the bear leapt upon them, but managed to activate the canister during the attack, and with help from a companion, convinced the bear to retreat.  In today's incident, the victim's companions used bear spray to end the assault.
